Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
