"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence required a new sound – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
